Fundy Baykeeper on TransCanada’s proposed Energy East Pipeline and potential oil spills in the Bay of Fundy

Fundy Baykeeper Matthew Abbott spoke with the Quoddy Tides on September 11th about the impacts the Energy East proposal could have on the Bay of Fundy ecosystem.

“With this pipeline proposal, we’re gambling thousands of existing, permanent jobs for the prospect of short?term employment that will leave the Bay of Fundy at risk for the long term.”

Abbott comments that the “regulatory process is designed to generate a yes on projects like this,” but public opposition is presenting a significant obstacle for TransCanada to overcome. “There are major hurdles,” he observes. “It’s not a sure bet.”

Shell Canada’s oil and gas drilling proposal in Nova Scotia also has the potential to impact the Bay of Fundy as drilled oil may be sent by tanker to Saint John. This would increase tanker traffic in the Bay of Fundy and could lead to an oil spill.
