Spruce up the Isthmus!

Interested in getting outside this summer and lending nature a helping hand? The Nature Conservancy is planting red spruce, red oak, and white pine saplings along the Chignecto Isthmus on June 17 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and they’re looking for your help!

The Chignecto Isthmus is a land bridge that serves as the only route for terrestrial wildlife to move into and out of Nova Scotia. This beautiful area features mixed forest, as well as an extensive system of swamps, lakes, marshes and bogs. In particular it is a key link for moose, Canada lynx, bobcat and northern goshawk, and is a nesting site for American black duck, green-winged teal and wood duck. By planting trees in this area, you will be helping to create a larger space for wildlife to cross safely between the two provinces!

Canadian Forest International will provide a short educational training presentation, then volunteers will set to work planting saplings in old fields along the isthmus.

The work will take place rain or shine, so be sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear! Lunch will be a BBQ provided by NCC. For more information, including carpooling arrangements and directions, visit the event page.

Here at the Conservation Council, we are on a hunt for the greatest trees in New Brunswick!

If you have a tree you would like to nominate for the second edition of our Great Trees of New Brunswick book, email forest@conservationcouncil.ca and be sure to check out our Great Trees of New Brunswick facebook page for more information. We are still on the hunt for grey birch, balsam fir and white spruce nominations!
