History made! New deal by Canada and the provinces (most of them) sets us on a path to clean growth and climate action

The Prime Minister and premiers struck a deal late Friday in Ottawa taking the nation another step closer to Climate action and renewable energy goals set out when they first met back in MarchRevealed on the heels of New Brunswick’s own Climate action plan, Prime Minister Trudeau and 11 out of 13 provincial and territorial premiers released a Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change during the first ministers’ meeting that took place in Ottawa on December 7th.

“Climate change poses significant risks to our environment, health and future economic prosperity,” said Gallant in the province’s Press Release.

“That is why your provincial government released a new plan to combat climate change this week. It is also why we have been working with the Trudeau government and other premiers to develop a plan to grow the Canadian economy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

The framework, which builds on commitments made at the Vancouver Declaration on Clean Growth and Climate Change in March 2016, represents a collaborative effort among provincial and territorial governments that outlines actions that must be taken to combat climate change, including:

  • Creating new opportunities for clean electricity generation, transmission, storage and sharing across the region;
  • enhancing energy efficiency programs to reduce GHG emissions across sectors and fuels (i.e., in the industrial, commercial, transportation and residential sectors, with special treatment for low and fixed-income families); and
  • support industrial emission reductions through clean technology and energy efficiency while maintaining productivity, and recognizing opportunities for greenhouse gas reduction from industrial production in the Belledune region.
