Shifting risks to another place is not a solution: CCNB Fundy Baykeeper on proposed Energy East extension to N.S.

Matt Abbott, Fundy Baykeeper at the Conservation Council of New Brunswick, was quoted in an article by the Chronicle Herald published on Dec 7, as saying that Senate report’s proposal to move the current route ending from Bay of Fundy to Nova Scotia isn’t really a solution – it’s just shift some of the risk.

“Expanded tanker traffic would be a real risk, but climate change is one of the primary risks facing the Bay of Fundy,” said Abbott.

The Transport and Communications Committee interim report released on Dec 7 recommends that the Energy East pipeline be extended by 500-kilometeres from its current proposed end-point in New Brunswick to Point Tupper, located on the Strait of Canso in Nova Scotia.

“The proposal might shift some of the risk to another place, but we’re really pushing for a shift away from these major fossil fuel infrastructure projects,” he said.

The Chronicle Herald reports that the company, TransCanada, building the pipeline says it’s not considering a change of plans.
