Conservation Council celebrates New Brunswick’s environmental heroes at 50th anniversary gala

FREDERICTON — The Conservation Council of New Brunswick celebrated 50 years of environmental action this weekend by honouring the people and organizations who have worked with us to improve the lives of New Brunswickers and the health of our communities.

Founded in October 1969, the Conservation Council celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2019-2020. The non-profit charity is the longest-standing environmental organization in New Brunswick and the third oldest in Canada.

The Council has remained New Brunswick’s leading voice for environmental protection and sustainable communities. Over the years, our public education campaigns and advocacy work led to landmark improvements in public policy and quality of life in New Brunswick, including the establishment of the Environmental Protection Act (1980), Clean Water Act (1989), Clean Air Act (1997), better policies on pesticide use, action to protect families’ health and safety from climate change and extreme weather, and better management of our marine resources, to name just a few.

We honoured the citizens and organizations who have stood alongside us in this work during a gala at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton on Saturday, Oct. 12.

“It is the perfect time of year to celebrate the dedicated New Brunswickers working to be part of the solution with us, coming in the wake of the global climate strikes and echoing the millions of young people across our planet calling for a better way forward,” says Lois Corbett, Executive Director of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick.

“From lifelong activists to young climate strikers, the Conservation Council has served as a source of community, action and positive change for New Brunswickers who know a better life is possible, and who are working passionately to make it happen,” says John Crompton, President of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick.

The Conservation Council of New Brunswick

Established in 1969, the Conservation Council of New Brunswick has remained the province’s leading public advocate for environmental protection. A member of the UN’s Global 500 Roll of Honour, we work to find practical solutions to help families and citizens, educators, governments and businesses protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, the precious marine ecosystem and the land, including the forest, that support us.
