Stephanie Merrill on NEB cuts to intervenor funding

Stephanie Merrill, acting Executive Director of the Conservation Council, spoke with CBC New Brunswick about cuts to intervenor funding related to TransCanada’s Energy East pipeline project.

The article was published on Monday, Sept. 21.

The CBC reported on three New Brunswick First Nations who are upset the National Energy Board cut funding for groups wanting to intervene in the Energy East project.

Merrill told CBC that First Nations weren’t the only groups upset by the decision to cut funding.  She said the funding cuts will make it hard to hire scientists and give them adequate compensation to complete their expert reviews.

“It feels like the National Energy Board is changing the rules half way through the game,” Merrill said.

“Scientists of this calibre they work in university settings and they have a whole lifetime of experience under their belt. We certainly want to make sure that we’re able to compensate them for their time.”
