FREDERICTON – A slate of expert river scientists have been tapped to provide the independent research that will help decide the future of the Mactaquac dam.

NB Power has partnered with the University of New Brunswick-based Canadian Rivers Institute to analyze the environmental impact of the looming decision it must make – to either replace, decommission or demolish the largest hydroelectric generating station in the Maritimes.

Conservation Council of New Brunswick spokeswoman Stephanie Merrill said the province’s foremost environmental organization will wait for the results of the study and where “the science tells us the right direction should be.”

“It’s really nice to hear that NB Power is thinking ahead,” Merrill said. “The Canadian Rivers Institute is the perfect group of scientists to undertake this kind of work.

“We really need to look ahead, we have lots of time, there are three options that NB Power has laid out, there are pros and cons to all of them, and so we have lots of time to discuss the implications.”
