PRESS RELEASE

Statement by Conservation Council’s Matt Abbott on announcement to restore the Petitcodiac River

Dec 16, 2016

(MONCTON) — Today’s announcement is a testament that successful restoration can be accomplished with strong, smart leadership and the dedication of engaged citizens.

A healthy Petitcodiac River is essential to a healthy Bay of Fundy. Like nature so often does, the Petitcodiac has already demonstrated, it can bounce back when given the attention it deserves.

The bridge project and removal of the causeway will improve habitat for fish, improve our ability to adapt to climate change, and entice new admirers to come to see the Tidal Bore and the great bend.

Today’s announcement is really great news for people in the towns and communities all along the River and to the Bay of Fundy including local industry and businesses, like the fisheries and tourism, that rely on them. The causeway gates were permanently opened in 2010 and since then a great deal of activity has taken place to restore the river by community groups, property owners as well as government, including major upgrades to Greater Moncton wastewater treatment facility announced earlier this week.
