It’s only been ten days since TransCanada filed its application with the National Energy Board seeking permission to build the largest oil pipeline (1.1 million barrels per day, yikes!) in Canada, but it seems longer.
I love talking about the exciting opportunities developing new jobs, today, in our communities. I am less enthusiastic when fending off the slick public relations pitches from the oil pipeline companies whose job creation spin is a wee bit over the top and the few positions they could create are years and years (if ever) away.
While issues like fracking and oil pipelines (did you know a spill from a break in the proposed pipeline could leak a million litres of dense, sticky oil into a river or the Bay of Fundy in just ten minutes?) seem to capture all the airtime and newsprint in New Brunswick lately, I say it’s high time we switched to a more productive conversation.
We are ready to step up our efforts to mobilize homeowners, social housing advocates and companies to address climate change and lead the transition we must make to a clean energy future. But we can’t do it without you.
When you join the Conservation Council (or get a friend to join) you help us amplify our voice. That helps switch the conversation from oil to solar, from jobs that may never come to jobs today, retrofitting our homes and putting more renewable energy projects in our communities.
We need a strong campaign for energy efficiency, not just one against carbon pollution. A campaign for immediate jobs that make our homes and businesses comfortable and affordable. A campaign about real solutions for real people, here.
November is Membership Month at the Conservation Council of New Brunswick. We’re giving a prize to one new member each week, and entering all names into another draw for a grand prize, a new camper stove valued at $200! Congratulations to last week’s winner, Afiena Larsen-Kamminga of Sackville. She won lunch at the delicious @Calactus Restaurant in Moncton. Thanks for joining, Afiena!
Yours truly,
