Meet Jon!

Meet Jon, the newest addition to the Conservation Council team, who is taking over communications duties out of our Fredericton office:

I’ve lived in Fredericton for 10 years since moving here from my hometown, the small agricultural community of Sussex, to study journalism at St. Thomas University.

I’ve been a staff reporter for a handful of newspapers in New Brunswick and have freelanced for many more. Most recently, I was the Fredericton reporter for HERE Magazine, the province’s urban alternative newspaper, which was discontinued in August, 2014.

As a reporter, my philosophy was rooted in the belief that newspapers and journalists are tasked with the challenge of finding what is broken in society and promoting the ideas, necessary actions, and people trying to fix them. I am beyond excited to apply that same philosophy to my work with the Conservation Council, an organization with a proven record for fostering meaningful change in the communities, forests and waterways of this province.

This is a bit of a dream job for me. There has perhaps never been a time in the history of New Brunswick when the need for reliable information, rigorous study, and a deep understanding of the social, economic and environmental issues we face has been so dire. That might sound scary, but I don’t mean it to be.

For me, it’s exciting, because now more than ever we have the means and resources to ensure we’re making the right decisions for the future of all life in this province. I feel CCNB is the perfect vessel for promoting those messages, and I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to work with people who are so determined and passionate about protecting the long term sustainability of New Brunswick.

On a more personal note, I enjoy cycling, hiking, swimming and gardening in the summer; skating, cross country skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing in the winter; and I have a moderate addiction to houseplants.
