Fundy Baykeeper on proposed new aquaculture regulations

Our Fundy Baykeeper, Matt Abbott, was one of 120 signatories on a letter written to Prime Minister Stephen Harper calling on him to scrap proposed new aquaculture regulations that would harm fisheries in Atlantic Canada and across the country.

The proposed regulations will exempt the aquaculture industry from provisions of the Fisheries Act that deal with the release of harmful substances into the water, and will remove Environment Canada oversight from the sector, leaving companies to regulate themselves.

The letter – which included signatures from retired government scientists, leading academics, business leaders, commercial and recreational fishing associations, lawyers and environmentalists – called on Prime Minister Harper to stop the regulations from coming into effect.

An article about the letter appeared in the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal on Feb. 18. Read it here.

A follow-up piece ran in the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal on Feb. 19 with comments from fishermen in Chance Harbour. Read it here.
