Conservation Council appointed member of Sustainability Development Advisory Council

FREDERICTON – The Conservation Council of New Brunswick’s Executive Director, Lois Corbett, has been appointed by the Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Honourable Catherine McKenna, to the Canada’s Sustainable Development Advisory Council.

Developed in response to the federal government’s promise to update our nation’s environmental policy, members of the Sustainable Development Advisory Council will work with Minister McKenna to review and update the federal governments draft 2016–2019 Federal Sustainable Development strategy (FDS).

“I look forward to working with Minister McKenna and Advisory Committee colleagues to help produce smart public policy around national government actions and environmental protection,” says Corbett.

“It is important for people from across this country to hear about how vital it is for New Brunswick to create new jobs and build sustainable towns, cities and rural communities while protecting the beautiful nature of the province.”

With the intention of setting federal commitments, programs and activities that support environmental sustainability, the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) is the three-year plan to review and update Canada’s outdated environmental policy.

Introduced just last February, the 2016-2019 FSDS draft is intended as a whole-government view of Federal Environmental Policies, and will set the federal government’s environmental sustainability agenda, its goals, and its environmental targets.

The FSDS draft plan focusing on five attainable goals for sustainable development:

?        Taking Action on Climate Change;

?        Clean Technology, Jobs and Innovation;

?        National Parks, Protected Areas and Ecosystems;

?        Freshwater and Oceans; and,

?        Human Health, Well-being and Quality of Life.

Though the Sustainable Development Advisory Council will provide an opportunity for environmental and policy specialists to review the draft Federal Sustainable Strategy in depth, the Department of Energy and Climate Change Canada is also looking for citizens’ input to the draft 2016-2019 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy. Canadians can voice their opinions and criticisms at here, by taking part in the government’s public consultation –-open until June 24, 2016.

“Together we can shape the final Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, to help create a healthier, more sustainable Canada. Be part of the conversation, a conversation that will help us ensure a sustainable future for all Canadians,” says Minister McKenna.
