Celebrating the Alewife’s journey: The Schoodic River Alewife Run

On May 27, an extraordinary event will take place in Maine, hosted by the Schoodic Riverkeepers: the Schoodic River Alewife Run. This family-friendly relay run is open to all ages and starts from the Sipayik Passamaquoddy Community and ends in Forest City, tracing the very path that alewife take upriver.

The Schoodic River, also known as the St. Croix River, has been the stage for this event multiple times, each year marking the spring return of alewife to the river in a truly unique and beautiful way. This year, however, is extra special. With the Milltown Dam slated for removal this summer, this spring represents the last time in two centuries that alewife will encounter a dam at Salmon Falls.

The Schoodic Riverkeepers, along with dedicated allies on both sides of the river, have been steadfast in efforts to restore fish runs. Finally, our efforts have borne fruit: fish runs are increasing, the first dam in the system is set for removal, and we have other fun outdoor events in the works.

Now, it’s time to celebrate! We’ve achieved a significant restoration milestone, and this celebration serves not only to mark our progress but also to reinvigorate our commitment to the river and its ongoing restoration.

We celebrate for the fish, but the benefits extend far beyond — to the whales, puffins, pollock, eagles, raccoons, and bears that will have more to eat, and, of course, for us and future generations who will enjoy a healthier, more vibrant ecosystem!

All runners and walkers are welcome, regardless of your experience or stamina. You are welcome to join us for the whole day or to run or walk one section, so no reason to be shy.

Let’s celebrate our progress and look forward to a brighter future for the Schoodic River!
