Smart step toward healthy, sustainable communities: Conservation Council statement on plan to phase out coal, create clean energy jobs

Lois Corbett, Executive Director, made the following statement in response to the Government of Canada’s announcement of the regulation to phase out coal power and the Just Transition task force to support coal workers and their communities:

“The Conservation Council welcomes the draft regulations as a smart step toward healthy, sustainable communities, particularly for families in northern New Brunswick.

We applaud the government for selecting a Just Transition task force that will help coal workers and traditionally coal-dependent communities move smoothly into stronger local economies based on the fast-growing renewable energy sector.

More Canadians already work in renewable energy than the oil and gas sector, while jobs in solar and wind energy have doubled worldwide since 2012, employing nearly 10 million people.

Meanwhile, the cost of both solar power and battery storage has fallen by 73 per cent since 2010.

The regulations to phase out coal pollution by 2030 sends a strong signal that it is the renewable energy entrepreneurs and job creators who will be the backbone of our local economies in short time to come.”
