“Rod Cumberland is one of my heroes”: Corbett at Rally for Rod

Upwards of 200 people gathered before the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in messy weather on Thursday, Nov. 21 to call for an independent inquiry into the firing of wildlife expert Rod Cumberland.

This summer, Cumberland was terminated from his teaching position at the Maritime College of Forest Technology. The former provincial deer biologist has been an outspoken critic of the use of glyphosate-based herbicides on Crown land in New Brunswick. Many believe he was fired for his opposition to the practice heavily favoured by New Brunswick’s powerful forestry companies.

Our Executive Director Lois Corbett spoke in support of Cumberland at the rally, calling him “one of my heroes.”

A Nov. 22 report in the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal noted that Corbett told the crowd New Brunswick’s next generation of forestry professionals are missing out on Cumberland’s wisdom, and called for an immediate ban on glyphosate spraying.
