The Path to a Low-Carbon Future: COP21 in Paris

Poster-lanscape-format-page-001The United Nations Climate Change Summit got underway today in Paris, France.

The heads of state of nearly 200 nations will meet over the next two weeks to hammer out an international agreement on climate change that keeps global warming below 2 degrees Celsius.

That’s the task at hand, and it comes with a good deal of challenges and opportunities.

Among those opportunities is the chance to speed up the global transition away from polluting fossil fuels to a safer, cleaner world powered by 100 per cent renewable energy.

Momentum is building. Earlier this year the G7 committed to phase out fossil fuels, the world’s largest pension fund decided to divest from coal, and faith communities, led by the Pope, are calling for urgent climate action on moral grounds. Support for renewables, meanwhile, has never been stronger, with the industry outstripping past projections and growing fast thanks to national initiatives, financial backing, and the demands of people and communities across the world.

We’re optimistic leaders will harness this momentum at Paris and strike an agreement that moves us swiftly and ambitiously toward a low-carbon future.

The Conservation Council has prepared a special edition of our membership magazine, EcoAlert, that is all about the UN Climate Change Summit and what role Canada should play in the global fight against climate change. The magazine will be available in the coming days.

In the meantime, beginning tomorrow, we’ll release a series of blog posts to help you understand the challenges and opportunities at the 21st Conference of the Parties in Paris.

To get you started, here’s a great infographic giving a rundown of what the climate conference (running Nov. 30-Dec. 11) is all about:
