Standing committee calls for public input on glyphosate use

Citizens in New Brunswick have an opportunity next month to have their say on glyphosate use in the Crown forest.

The standing committee on climate change and environmental stewardship, which is studying the use of herbicides and pesticides in N.B., is inviting citizens, organizations, subject-matter experts and stakeholders to present on glyphosate use during public hearings slated for March 24-27 in Fredericton.

The Conservation Council will appear at the hearing on behalf of thousands of our supporters who have written letters, attended rallies and signed petitions to stop the old-fashioned and unnecessary practice of spraying herbicides in the Crown forest.

If you wish to make a presentation, contact the Office of the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly by phone (506-453-2506) or email leg-consultations@gnb.ca by Friday, March 13. Those who want to submit a written brief on glyphosate spraying can do so before March 20.

In the first week of February, the committee heard updates from the departments of Environment and Local Government; Natural Resources and Energy Development; Transportation and Infrastructure; Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries; Public Safety, as well as from Service New Brunswick and NB Power.

The hearings are open to the public and take place at the legislative assembly building in Fredericton. You can listen to audio from the hearings on the assembly’s website.
