Show your support for the trees at Officers’ Square

The City of Fredericton is holding a special development committee meeting on Tuesday, June 26 to hear people’s views on the mature trees in Officers’ Square.

In late May news broke in the media that the city’s plan to revitalize the National Historic Site included cutting down 19 mature trees. Mayor Mike O’Brien put the plan on hold after community groups, including the newly-formed Save Officers’ Square and your Conservation Council, rallied public support behind the majestic trees and called for a solution that keeps the decades-old sentinels rooted where they stand.

The special development committee meeting takes place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26 at the Delta Fredericton Hotel (225 Woodstock Rd.). We encourage members to attend to show your support for a smart, progressive solution.

The Conservation Council’s Dr. Nadine Ives, Learning Outside project coordinator, will make a presentation to the committee about the importance of mature, urban trees and the need to move beyond old-fashioned development decisions.

The city clerk’s office is currently accepting written comments and presentations from individuals or groups until the day of the meeting. If you are interested in submitting comments, contact the clerk at 460-2857 or cityclerk@fredericton.ca
