Nominate your Great Tree this Arbor Day

National Arbor Day (April 28) and Arbor Day in New Brunswick (May 18) are the perfect opportunities to celebrate the importance of one of our most iconic species of plant life and an irreplaceable part of our ecosystem – the proud and noble tree!

We know trees play many crucial roles in our environment. These carbon-capturing silent sentinels provide us with a large portion of the planet’s fresh air, help balance air temperature and humidity, and protect land against erosion, among many other important functions.

But they can also make a lasting impression on the people who grow up around them.

Do you have a favourite tree that has left a mark on your life? Maybe you identify with the strong branches of the sturdy old crab-apple tree you climbed as a child? Or perhaps, you prefer the sombre shade a weeping willow provides on a hot summer day?

For National Arbor Day and Arbor Day in N.B. this year, celebrate your favourite tree by nominating it for our book, Great Trees of New Brunswick, Vol. 2. The Conservation Council of New Brunswick is working with forester David Palmer to tell the stories of the native trees New Brunswickers hold most dear.

We’ve received some amazing nominations so far, but we need you to keep them coming! Send us your nomination (including a photo of your tree) to forest@conservationcouncil.ca or by calling 458-8747.

We’re still seeking nominations for the Large-toothed Aspen, Trembling Aspen, Balsam Fir and the Jack Pine, so if you know a special one of these trees, be sure to snap a picture and let us know why you think it deserves a spot in Great Trees of New Brunswick, Vol. 2.
