Before Lieutenant Governor Jocelyne Roy-Vienneau read the throne speech last week, your Conservation Council set the bar for what was needed to get a passing grade on the environment, calling for clear commitments to:

  • Ban herbicide spraying in our Crown forest,
  • Secure protection of at least 10 per cent of New Brunswick’s land and water by 2020;
  • Enact comprehensive laws to protect our rivers, streams, wetlands, lakes and coastlines,
  • Take action on climate change by ramping up investments in renewable energy and protect our health by phasing out coal-fired electricity by 2030,
  • Protect drinking water by maintaining the moratorium on fracking, and,
  • Get a long-overdue review of the Crown Lands and Forests Act to protect woodlot owners and biodiversity.
