Job posting: Learning Outside Project Assistant (20 hrs per week)

The Conservation Council of New Brunswick is a non-profit organization that creates awareness of environmental problems and advances practical solutions through research, education and interventions. The Learning Outside project  emerged out of our recognition that children today have less opportunity to explore and learn in the natural world than earlier generations.  The Learning Outside project aims to help children connect with nature by supporting teachers and schools in taking students outside for curriculum-linked activities in nature.  We develop educational materials linked to all elementary subject areas, facilitate activities with classes, and also help schools develop outdoor learning spaces (nature trails, signage, etc.). We also work with community groups and other educators.

We are looking for a part-time assistant to help with all aspects of the Learning Outside project.

Responsibilities include assisting the project coordinator in all aspects of program delivery:

  • Working with teachers and classes on outdoor activities
  • Developing curriculum-linked modules, including activities linked to curriculum and/or subject areas and all the materials and background information required by teachers to deliver the lessons
  • Researching learning opportunities linked to New Brunswick habitats and species
  • Helping develop education materials for families and the general public
  • Helping promote, develop and facilitate community activities and workshops
  • Creating social media posts relevant to the Learning Outside project’s work
  • Helping update the Learning Outside website
  • Participating in teleconferences, meetings, etc. with our partners in outdoor nature education
  • Representing the Conservation Council and Learning Outside at various community events, information booths, etc.

Requirements:

  • Background or relevant experience in teaching/education and/or background in nature education
  • Strong interest in sharing nature, teaching about the natural world
  • Strong interest in connecting children with nature
  • Experience/interest in biology, ecology, earth sciences, citizen science, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English
  • Strong interpersonal skills / ability to communicate with all ages
  • Computer skills (including website and social media)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Project coordination, event planning, working with the public and youth

Also considered assets:

  • Interest/experience in environmental issues (ie. watersheds, , forests, biodiversity, endangered species, climate change, invasive species)
  • Knowledge of New Brunswick habitats and species
  • Knowledge of New Brunswick curriculum
  • Proficiency in written and oral French language
  • Driver’s license
  • Experience in event organization

Location: Fredericton, with occasional travel around New Brunswick.
