Full-time Contract Position: Gulf of Saint Lawrence Fisheries Specialist

Our experienced, dedicated staff are often called upon to provide strategic advice to various groups, help communities address environmental issues in their neighbourhood, and spearhead region-wide partnerships which garner greater attention to the issues affecting the ecological health of our province.

About the Project: CCNB Marine Team

CCNB is hiring a new position to extend our longstanding marine work on the Bay of Fundy to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and Northumberland Strait. This work is focused primarily on sustainable fisheries.The successful candidate will also work on other CCNB Marine priorities as needed. This work is part of a regional collaboration, and the new hire will work in partnership with fisheries experts and campaigners from Oceans North and CPAWS Atlantic chapters, especially CPAWS NB.

Location is negotiable along New Brunswick’s Gulf of Saint Lawrence and Northumberland Strait coast. The Position will require travel to Fredericton 1/month, additional travel throughout region and Province, and calls with Team 1/week. Travel will be remunerated but a vehicle and drivers license in good standing is required.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Position responsibilities will include:

  • Engage with Gulf fisheries leadership and associations, and government concerning fisheries resource management, including participation in fisheries stock assessment and other fisheries science / regulatory processes relating to groundfish and forage fish.
  • Develop relationships with indigenous communities, fisheries associations, coastal communities to forward sustainable fisheries management.
  • Work primarily on New Brunswick based fisheries files, though work in Quebec will also be required.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and community groups from Scotian Shelf and Bay of Fundy.
  • Report to CCNB leadership on a regular basis and assisting with preparation of reports for funders and partners.

Position Requirements:

  • French language skills: bilingual, fluent French speaking a requirement. Successful candidate will need to communicate with colleagues in English on a regular basis. Direct supervisor, however, is functionally bilingual.
  • Broad range of knowledge about ocean biodiversity, fisheries management, fisheries science, and current international standards for ocean conservation.
  • Ability to make connections among and between science, policy, public education and advocacy
  • Experience with science communication and media relations, especially as it relates to Gulf of Saint Lawrence and Northumberland Strait coast topics.
  • Knowledge of and connections to fishing associations, fishing communities, and Indigenous communities in Acadie and the Gulf of St Lawrence Region
  • Government relations skills: demonstrated ability to work with regional, provincial, and federal government agencies and departments, and working knowledge of Gulf Region Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Coast Guard
  • Minimum of undergraduate degree (graduate degree an asset) in science, environmental studies, fisheries, or equivalent. Equal and demonstrable professional experience and background will also be considered.
  • Strong independent work ethic and experience, while also appreciating and supporting collaborative team dynamics and work flows
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
