EcoNews — Irving’s pollution plea, Canada’s corporate litterbugs, and – finally – something we can all agree on

In this edition of EcoNews, we give you everything you need to write your MLA and political party leaders to show your support for protecting land and water in N.B.; we bring you the bizarro-world plea deal Irving is proposing after pleading guilty to once again polluting a national heritage river; we share the findings of Greenpeace Canada’s first-ever plastic pollution audit; and we invite you to join us at our next Annual General Meeting in Fredericton!

Take action for N.B. nature today!

Right now, 95 per cent of New Brunswick’s land and water is unprotected, leaving vital ecosystems vulnerable to development, climate change and pollution. We can change this, and right now is the time to do it. We’ve partnered with our friends at Nature Canada, Nature NB, Nature Trust of New Brunswick, and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society NB Chapter to make it easy for you to speak up for nature.

Should Irving’s pollution fine go to an Irving-led project?

Just when you thought you’d heard of everything. After pleading guilty to polluting the St. John River, lawyers for J.D.Irving Ltd. are proposing a plea deal that would see Irving pay part of its fine to a salmon conservation company chaired by the pulp mill’s own co-CEO, James Irving.

Most plastic litter in Canada leads back to these 5 companies

From wrinkled, old Tim Hortons coffee cups to crumpled candy wrappers, mangled Pepsi bottles and empty, waterworn cigarette packs — we’ve all noticed the glint of iconic logos mixed among the grass, half-buried in the sand and rocks at the beach, or tangled in trees along our favourite trail. What companies are responsible for the bulk of the plastic and waste littering our woods, waterways and parks? Greenpeace Canada has the answer.
