Corbett speaks with CTV News on new pipeline rules

Executive Director Lois Corbett appeared on CTV News Atlantic on Thursday, Jan. 28.

Corbett told reporter Michael Cameron that she welcomed the new requirements for pipeline megaprojects announced earlier this week by Ministers McKenna and Carr.

“The day before yesterday when we looked at pipeline projects we only looked at the pipe itself, only the steel in the ground, and that’s kind of silly,” Corbett said. “We should always look at what we’re pushing around.”

Earlier in the week, Corbett spoke with the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal about the changes.

Today, the ministers are sending a very strong signal that the old days of not considering climate consequences of oil projects are behind us,” she said.

Corbett told the newspaper that all energy projects should be viewed through a “climate change lens,” adding these changes are overdue and could provide a better understanding of the environmental impacts of proposed megaprojects such as TransCanada’s Energy East pipeline.

I like this approach moving forward,” she said. “Did it stop the project? No, it didn’t. But it will help us get better information. I don’t know how we expect cabinet ministers to make decisions on poor information. Every bit of good information should help us get better science-based decisions.
