Conservation Council’s recommendations for a strong water strategy

The Conservation Council has submitted comments on the Department of Environment and Local Government’s draft water strategy, A Water Strategy for New Brunswick 2018-2028.

Following the release of the draft water strategy, we created a free toolkit and prewritten letter to help the public and supporting groups respond to the government’s call for public comments. As of the November 20 deadline, hundreds of letters had been submitted calling for a stronger water protection strategy.

Our comments focused on the need for a water strategy that keeps all water in New Brunswick swimmable, drinkable, and fishable. Since 2015, the province has issued seven blue-green algae advisories and 139 boil water orders. To ensure the health of our water and ultimately the health of our families and communities, we urged the Department of Environment to develop modern legislation, based in science, and work quickly to protect our coastal areas and forested watersheds.
