Beating plastic pollution: Vancouver becomes first city in world with zero-waste strategy

Vancouver is upping the ante when it comes to the global effort to #BeatPlasticPollution, announcing on May 16 that it is the first city in the world to implement a zero-waste strategy that bans single-use straws, foam cups and take-out containers.

The city’s  Zero Waste 2040 Strategy is a smart, bold step in the battle against the plastic polluting our land and oceans.

Momentum is building across Canada. Here in New Brunswick, Moncton is moving toward a ban on single-use plastic bags, meanwhile, in January Montreal became the first major Canadian city to ban plastic bags and Victoria, B.C. is not far behind, implementing its plastic bag ban this coming Canada Day.

The progressive actions being taken among Canadians, and the expanding public awareness surrounding plastic waste, are important stepping stones that can help end plastic pollution in Canada, once and for all.

We want to see our environment thrive so it can support animal populations, sustainable jobs, and provide a cleaner, safer, healthier world for all.

Let’s continue the push for monumental change in Canada.

We want to hear from you! Tell us what steps you are taking to eliminate plastic waste in your life, at home or at work. Share your stories and experiences below, and let us know how you plan on being part of this groundbreaking social movement!
