N.B. announces $20M for energy retrofits in public buildings

The Government of New Brunswick recently announced it is investing more than $20 million this year in energy retrofits and renewable energy initiatives in public buildings. This latest investment represents a roughly $7 million increase over the $13.4 million and $13.3 million invested in 2016 and 2015, respectively.

The Conservation Council is pleased to see the government is accelerating investments in the low-carbon economy. We’ve long advocated for energy efficiency upgrades in public buildings as low-hanging fruit that will reduce greenhouse gases and create good-paying jobs here at home.  See our Conservation Council Climate Action plan for more details.

Since 2005, government investments in clean energy have helped pay for lighting upgrades in more than 200 schools, heating and ventilation work in more than 50 schools, and various projects at other public buildings such as hospitals, office buildings and garages, according to the province’s new release.

Initiatives receiving funding from this latest round of investment include:

  • Water Conservation
  • Enacting energy management and upgrading controls
  • Creating energy recovery systems for ventilation systems
  • Managing energy demand using renewable energy initiatives
  • Lighting upgrades and retrofits
  • Heat pump improvements
  • Installation of wood pellet boilers
