“I like this approach moving forward” — CCNB responds to new requirements for pipeline projects

Executive Director Lois Corbett spoke with the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal following the announcement from federal cabinet ministers Jim Carr and Catherine McKenna about critical new rules for pipeline and energy projects. See our official response to the new requirements here.

In article published Thursday, Jan. 28, Corbett told the Telegraph-Journal she welcomed the new rules.

Today, the ministers are sending a very strong signal that the old days of not considering climate consequences of oil projects are behind us,” she said.

Corbett told the newspaper that all energy projects should be viewed through a “climate change lens,” adding these changes are overdue and could provide a better understanding of the environmental impacts of proposed megaprojects such as TransCanada’s Energy East pipeline.

I like this approach moving forward,” she said. “Did it stop the project? No, it didn’t. But it will help us get better information. I don’t know how we expect cabinet ministers to make decisions on poor information. Every bit of good information should help us get better science-based decisions.
