EcoNews — Five things to love on Valentine’s Day

In this edition of EcoNews, we bring you a feel-good list of five things we just know you’ll love on this Valentine’s Day — from celebrating a big win for our ocean and coastlines to giving you the chance to write your love letter to nature in New Brunswick, it’s just one of our ways of saying how much we love and appreciate the support you’ve given your Conservation Council over the years! Happy reading.

News

We love our bays, oceans and beaches!

We love the changes announced recently for an improved federal Fisheries Act that will keep our oceans healthy and keep sustainable fisheries thriving in our coastal communities! The changes mean good news for our wet province, providing much-needed habitat protection and ensuring the livelihoods of New Brunswickers who depend on a healthy marine environment, from the Bay of Chaleur, down along the Northumberland Strait, clear out to the beautiful Bay of Fundy.

Love writing letters?

More than 95 per cent of the land in New Brunswick is unprotected — no way to treat the place you love! The good news is our friends at the Nature Trust of New Brunswick have made it easy for you to sing out in support of protecting nature by writing your MLA! It only takes a few seconds for you to send some love to New Brunswick’s natural beauty this Valentine’s Day.

Love your local producers!

Our BuyLocalNB directory makes it easier than ever for you to find something extra special for the people you love. Use the searchable database to find great gift ideas like local crafts, jewelry, or mouth-watering sweets, from St. Stephen’s famous Ganong Brothers to other boutique NB chocolatiers!

We love shiny rooftops

Some great news we know you’ll love — the City of Fredericton made its first foray into city-owned solar power with the installation of a 17-kilowatt array at the Killarney Lake Lodge. Even sweeter? The array was installed by CCNB member Mark McCann and his team at MJM Solar Solutions. The mayor says this first project (first solar project, mind you: Fredericton is already doing some great things with renewables — think geothermal at the Grant Harvey Centre or methane capture at landfills) will pave the way for even bigger things to come.

Love the outdoors?

What’s better than an evening snowshoeing through woodland trails, warming up around a toasty bonfire and sipping home-made soup with fresh biscuits and scrumptious dessert? Doing it all in the company of fun, like-minded folks. If you missed our first Lantern Snowshoe Hike in 2016, you won’t want to pass this event up again! Space is limited for the March 10 hike, so reserve your spot today!
