Corbett welcomes “breakthrough” budget, $1.3B for conservation

Our Executive Director, Lois Corbett, told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal that the federal government’s 2018-19 budget is a “breakthrough for whales, wildlife and water.”

Corbett said the government’s investment of $1.3 billion to protect nature shows that it is listening and acting, like never before, on Canadians’ deep connection to nature and their desire to see the forests, parks, lands and waters we love — and the wildlife who call these places home — protected.

“It’s baffling, but right now, in our picture province, more than 95 per cent of New Brunswick lands are not protected,” Corbett said. “An investment of this size should see a significant increase in protected areas for our province, from expanding important wildlife habitats and migratory bird sanctuaries, to preserving more of our beloved natural Acadian forest.”

Roberta Clowater, executive director of our friends at the New Brunswick chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, was also quoted in the article.

While welcoming the historic investment, Clowater urged the provincial government to develop a target and action plan for conservation in order to take full advantage of the funding.
